Master's Dissertation Writing Guidelines: The Objectives

Master’s dissertations are lengthy and complicated. If you do not have an idea of what your exact objectives are with your research, you will end up walking around in circles, with no end in sight. It is very important to be crystal clear about what specifically you are trying to do. This will help you formulate your objectives. If you are looking for help on how to do that, read on to find some great tips to help you succeed.

  • Plan before you act on your impulse to start writing. It is a very difficult thing to do to stop yourself from starting to write right away because you need to finish what you can see is obviously going to be a lot of work. However, take a moment to reflect. You need to plan your way into this.
  • Start with the choice of a Subject Area. This should ideally be an area that interests you greatly. Within that area, narrow down to a topic. Make sure it is not too narrow an area, such that it will not allow you to do any significant research in it. Also, make sure it is an area of real importance, so that any study you carry out will have tangible benefits for you, your readers and the subject area.
  • With the topic chosen, you are now ready to form you thesis statement. This is the very basis of your paper so it should be considered extremely carefully. With the thesis statement in hand, create an outline for your whole paper. Create headings and sub topics for your introduction, your paper’s main body, the literature review, your experiment’s methodology and your conclusions. Leave nothing out.
  • Having successfully reached this stage, you will suddenly notice that you have already formulated your objectives for your master’s thesis. It is now just a matter of putting them down on paper for your audience to read and consume.
  • Start with the main body of the paper first. Always write the Introduction and abstract last, when you have everything else written down. This will help you write a good summary. Start writing about your topic, its importance and why your research is needed and has relevance in the body of work for the subject area. Support this last point with a literature review.
  • Define your experiment and its methodology and why it is being done the way it is being done. You have now established your objectives for your readers too.
  • Continue to finish the rest of the paper. Review extensively and submit.
